Main Mission

This page documents the full process of my main mission. It includes visuals, soundscapes, and the story behind the process.

The installation shows how thoughts before sleep can develop into dreams and fears that feel very personal, while in reality they are often shared. By allowing two people to enter the same dream state side by side, without seeing each other, it becomes clear that no one is alone in these mental processes. Progress The main mission started with a very vague idea, which ultimately transformed into an audiovisual experience. My group (like many others) experienced some teething problems when setting up the concept. We started with a lot of brainstorming, after which we worked on sketching and writing down our ideas. For the first few low-fi products, we mainly tried to create a lot of visuals. Then we realised that we needed to put the concept down on paper in a more concrete way. After asking for a lot of feedback in class from Olivier and Caro, for example, we put it down on paper in a really concrete way. Sam drew a nice storyboard, after which I drew a storyboard based on the experience. After that, we decided that we wanted to do more of the filming ourselves, to make it seem more realistic. I then worked on creating a shot list and an accompanying storyboard. Once we had all that, Merel focused on the technology behind our setup, Sam on the visuals, and I on the audio. The audio was one of the last steps of the project before we could hold the exhibition. From one soundscape, we ended up with about 12 versions, all of which differ slightly in time and, in some cases, sound. Since the visuals changed at the last minute, the audio also kept changing, especially in terms of length. The whispering voices you can hear in the final audio were also very last minute, but with Leon on our side, it all worked out fine. In the end, I am very happy with how the audio turned out, and it was an interesting project to work on. The exhibition didn't go without a hitch either. It was, of course, the first time for all of us that we had to build such a large experience, so a lot of creativity was involved during the construction. It wasn't all perfect, as the canvases started to hang lower and lower at one point, but it all looked very cozy and nice. The best thing, for me, about the exhibition was the reaction of the people. I couldn't have imagined that so many people would be curious about a project we had created, but the experiences of the people made the time we put into it worthwhile.
